For Naples Christian Academy
I’m doing my first charity book signing for Naples Christian Academy on April 20-21. Here’s the plan: On Friday, April 20th, I’m going to be at NCA all day selling A Prophecy Forgotten for $25. The regular price is $27.99, but I don’t want to deal with the change. On Saturday, April 21st, I’ll be at the Naples Christian Academy Pancake Breakfast at Beef O’Brady’s from 7:30 to 9:30 selling and signing A Prophecy Forgotten for $25. All profits, which equal just a bit under $10 per book, will be donated to NCA.

A Prophecy Forgotten Now Available at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble
Or, Why I Have the Best Mother-In-Law in the World
I finally got the book last night, but I’ve been told that it always takes a two to three weeks after the proof has been approved before knowledge of the book hits Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble. So, I figured that I had about two weeks to plan my bookstore tour, in which I’m going to pile all my info into the car and take a drive from here to Ft. Myers and back, stopping at bookstores and begging for book signings.
That is, until my mother-in-law gives me a call and tells me that I’m already on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.com. Talk about a freak out moment! I wouldn’t have even thought to check the websites for another week! I thanked her profusely, as her little call changed my entire plan for this week, drove home immediately and changed from shorts and flip flops to Capri pants and heels, printed up all the stuff I planned to bring to Barnes & Noble—Naples, and headed off. Oh, and I took my hair out of the ratty pony-tail and put it up in a nice clip. I grabbed a copy of A Prophecy Forgotten, which my publisher requires all of his authors to have on hand at all times, marched into Barnes & Noble, and made an “appointment” for next Thursday with the Community Relations Manager there to discuss book signings, so stay tuned for more news. Anyway, all of this is because of my wonderful mother-in-law, who is looking out for me!

A Prophecy Forgotten Has Finally Arrived!
And I’m Too Tired to be Excited!
Well, the books I ordered were supposed to arrive today. So I waited. And waited. And waited some more. By 3:45, Greg and I had to leave to clean a salon. Once we finished (5:00), we raced home to see if the books were there because we were meeting someone whom I was going to give a book to anyway—and they weren’t there. So we left to clean some more—three more hours of office cleaning—and we came home exhausted. And the books were sitting at our door!
Let me tell you, the cover for A Prophecy Forgotten is just plain cool. The colors look great up close and far away, and—It’s just cool.
It’s funny, when people finally realize that you have written a book and the accomplishment that comes with it. For me, the realization was complete when I signed a contract with ArcheBooks. The publishing contract is the hard part. The rest—the writing, editing, waiting, etc.—is peaches compared to the difficulty of actually getting the book published. So the moment I signed the contract, I considered myself a professional author.
I’ve come to realize, however, that it’s different for the rest of the world. A book is a book when it’s a book. I guess that makes sense. It’s been a little hard to sell a future book. J.K. Rowling can, but I haven’t been able to—yet. Just you wait!

Play Ball!
Grab the peanuts and the cracker jacks! Dust off the jerseys! Pull out the score books! Baseball Season has officially begun, and my New York Yankees won their Opening Day game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Yanks were down 5 to 3 for a while until Jeter tied the game with a two run scoring, bases loaded single. Then A-Rod decided to homer to make up for an earlier error, and Rivera struck out the side. A great game. (Not as great as the opening game a few years ago against Boston where Rivera gave up the lead in the 9th and Jeter won the thing with a big fat homer, but it was good. Yes, I remember these things.) And the Yanks did it without me clutching my lucky lavender blanket!

My First Newspaper Article
Or, The Naples Sun Times Features M. B. Weston in Book Beat
My first newspaper article is finally in print. Dr. Phil Jason, professor emeritus of English from the United States Naval Academy (GO NAVY! BEAT ARMY!) just wrote a feature on me in the Book Beat Section of the Naples Sun Times. It’s a free local paper here in Naples. The article is called, “A Down-to-Earth, Out-of-this-World Author.” For those of you in Naples who want to get the article, go to your nearest grocery store and find the free publications section. Grab the Naples Sun Times. It’s got three blond chicks on the front of it about some fashion show put on by Saks. Skip that and go to page 19A.
I can now proudly say that I have shared printing ink with Sinbad, who is featured on the page just after me. Pretty cool, huh?

I’ve Been Selected as a Panelist at BabelCon!!!
Or, How I Decided to Do a Book Tour in the South!
Great news! I’ve been selected as a panelist at BabelCon, and up-and-coming sci-fi/fantasy expo in Baton Rouge. It just happens to occur a week after the Children of Destiny Conference, which means I’ll probably be able to do a little book tour of the Florida Panhandle, Alabama, and Louisiana. (No, I did not realize how close it was to the Children of Destiny Conference when I booked it.)

I've Booked My First Kids Conference as a Motivational Speaker
Or, How You Never Know What Can Happen At a Writers Conference...
I was not able to share this in my Emerald Coast Writer's Conference blog because it was not "set in stone" as the cliche goes, but I can share it now. I have just booked my first weeklong conference as a motivational speaker. From July 23 to 27, I will be speaking at the Children of Destiny Conference put on by Grace Tabernacle Church at Ft. Walton Beach to kids from 1st grade on up to 8th. There, for 45 minutes a day, I shall tell the kids a story from another series I've created (name to follow once I figure it out) and draw spiritual parallels from it. I'm so excited because this is what I believe I've been called to do. (More on that below.)
The amazing part about this is how it happened. First, understand that I was leery of going to the Emerald Coast conference because of the distance from Naples (9 hrs). Still, something told me I should go, so I went. On Friday, I presented a workshop entitled, "The Three Rules of Great Writing." I also passed out my book in e-book form on CD, my trustee first chapter brochure, and a bookmark. Unbeknownst to me, the Associate Pastor for Grace Tabernacle Church, a non-denominational church just like mine, was sitting in the audience. He read my first chapter brochure, including the short bio about how I love to work and speak to kids in my youth group, and handed me his card immediately after the workshop, saying that he wanted me to speak at his conference. We discussed the message he wanted me to give, and--low and behold!--I had already developed a six series lesson plan that tells the story of a boy named Darin who enters the service of Prince Stephen who is trying to take his kingdom back from the clutches of the evil Duke of Archenbrand. (I've already got the 30 second pitch for it, and the book isn't even written.) He loved the series (I sent him an outline over e-mail two hours after I discussed it with him.) and just okayed it with his pastor today.
Now for the freaky part. I don't know what any of you believe about God. For me, God is so real, and I've seen Him work in my life in so many ways. Last summer, I attended a youth conference as a chaperone, and as I was listening to the speaker something told me to listen well because I would be doing conferences one day. It didn't make any sense then--I was a small time youth worker waiting to be published, but I decided to follow the idea. I changed my style of speaking from analytical to parable telling, and created the Darin Series for my youth group. Now, less than a year later, I've just booked a youth conference where I'll be using that very series--due to a writers conference that I wasn't sure I wanted to go to but attended because something told me I needed to be there. Some people might call it a coincidence, but I don't think so.
